Money & Banking Pictures of Montenegro Money and Banking The official currency is the euro, which replaced the deutschmark in early 2002. An unlimeted amount of foreign currency may be brought into the country but no more then 500,- may be re-exported unless they were declared on entry. Euros in Montenegro, just like euros everywhere, come in notes of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 250 and 500 euros. The coins come in 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and 1 and 2 euros. As with so many things in Montenegro, the currency exhange scene is in state of rapid change for better. Credit cards are not yet widely accepted though the bigger hotels, shops, restaurants and travel agents sometimes take them. Diners is the most common, Visa comes second, American Express and Mastercard a very bad equal third. There are still not many cash machines in Montenegro, but the number is increasing. Until recently a cashpoint at the Podgorica Bank at Trg Ivana Milutinovia, Podgorica was the only one prepared to advance money against Visa Cards. But now Atlas Mont Bank installed machines in Budva and Podgorica for Visa. And Euromarket installed Visa mastercard machines in Podgorica, Budva, Ulcinj, Bar and Kotor. Atlas Mont and Euromarket will also cash euro travellers' cheques. Major foreighn currencies may be exhanged at branches of Montenegrobanka, Jugobanka, Podgoricabanka. Banking Hours are 08.00 - 19.00 on weekdays, 08.00 - 13.00 on saterday and closed on Sundays.
