Durmitor
39.000 ha Pictures
of Montenegro
The
39.000 ha Durmitor National Park has magnificent mountains, alpine
lakes and on one side, the Tara Canyon, on the other, the Piva Canyon,
with its almost equally wild and beautiful river. There is a choice
of small towns and hotels around the edge of the park.
The Durmitor range has 27 peaks over 2.200 meters high and in all
there are 48 peaks over 2.000 meter high, five canyons and 18 glacial
lakes, among which the Black Lake is best known. There are 748 springs
of pure mountain water and forests in which trees are more then a
hundred years old. Along its 2000 km of climbing and hiking trails
you can find many caves, such as Ledina Pecina ( Ice - Cave) which
is below Obla Glava peak ( 2.100 m) If you choose to enter and vieuw
its impressive stalagmites and stalactites (remember the childhood
line : " mites grow up and tites go down" ) you should remember
to dress warmly even during summer. |

Close to the Durmitor massif is Tara, the longest river in Montenegro.
Its crystal clear potable water is equally enchanting whether it is
tripping through the plains or hurtling through the magnificent canyon.
The canyon is the longest and deepest in Europe, reaching at points
1.300 sheer meters. Pine trees grow at impossible angles from its
sides and waterfalls seem to appear from nowhere tumbling to the river
below. Along with Durmitor, it has been UNESCO protected since 1977.
If you are camping overnight on its banks you will discover its community
of bats. You are less likely to discover the Durmitor zvoncic
( Durmitor Bell), a flower unique to the mountain.
Rafting the rapid has been comprehensively assesed on this river and
is a wonderfully exhilarating experience, whether by kayak, rubber
boat or the elaborately handcrafted vessels. There is an abundance
of fish, plenty both for you and for the otters that live on its bank. |

Wildlife
Bears
and wolves are uncommon in Durmitor
and might be only be seen on the periphery and in the wilderniss of
Sinjajevina. Chamois are found on the higher slopes, along with the
more familiar hare and fox. Not unexpectedly, squirrels are the most
numerous species of wildlife and trout are the most usual fish in
the fast-flowing rivers and lakes; but there are loads of less usual
ones also. Besides frogs, in pools and lakes there are some rare protected
amphibians of particular scientific interest. Amongst over a hundred
different birds are grouse, grey mountain eagle, white headed vulture,
falcon and crossbill. Expect your walks to be accompanied by a choir
of songbirds. |
Caves
and Sinkholes
Because of the karst formation, Durmitor can claim
200 caves and sinkholes so far discoverd, many of them located in
the river canyons, and some it can be presumed sheltering traces of
prehistoric man. The most notable include the ice cave, Ledina Pecina,
at 2.100 Meters at Globa Glava on the north face of Bobotov Kuk, with
frozen stalagmites over 3 Meter high and quite easily reached from
a mountain path, and the sinkholes near Vjetrina Brda in the south,
so far explored to a depth of 905 Meters.
With the benefit of 4WD or mountain bike it is possible to make an
exceptional round trip of the piedmountain area of the massif at altitudes
of 1.500 Meters. Otherwise Savin Kuk is minimal foot-slog, high-level
possibility. Take the chairlift from the bus stop at Virak to St Sava's
Spring, considered to have healing properties, and in ten minutes
you can walk to Kulina peak for a splendid vieuw. A second chairlift
rises from beside the Durmitor Hotel to Mali Stuoc. |

"The
whole Montenegro was lying in front of us like on a relief map.
The sun was playing quietly with waves of Boka, the surface of the
Skadar lake was glittering there, and the blue Adriatic was fading
on the horizon. In the wild luxury, the Albanian Alps and the coastal
mountain Rumija were rising. The eyes were roaming through enduring
series of mountain chains and valleys, while in the background,
the snowy crests of the Durmitor and Komovi mountains were sending
their last regards. Podgorica was ascending from the green valley.
I could not take my eyes off that beautiful sight."
