The Ostrog Monastery

Ostrog Monastery were built in the 17th century by Vladika St. Vasilije of Zahumlje and Herzegovina who was 1 of the 4 Montenegrin saints. All his relics are beeing kept in the Ostrog monastery and they are believed to posses healing powers. The Ostrog monastery is a major sanctuary and a favorite visiting place for Orthodox Christians. The Ostrog monastery is located between the cities Danilovgrad and Niksic.

The Ostrog Monastery


The Ostrog monastery is built up out two churches. The so called Upper Church built in a cave, contructed in 1655 and decorated by wallpaintings made in the same period from the artist Radul. The Lower Church dates from the 18th century. Among its treasures, the Church owns a prayer book (Mineon) from 1732 and decorated candlesticks from 1779.
