Banja Monastery

by Discover Montenegro
The banja monastery in Montenegro.

Hidden in plain sight along the coastal road between Risan and Perast, Banja Monastery (Manastir Banja) is one of those places that instantly lowers the volume of the world. Here, the Bay of Kotor glimmers below, cypresses sway in the breeze, and the monastery’s quiet stone walls hold centuries of prayer, rebuilding, and local memory.

Banja is an Orthodox monastery under the Metropolitanate of Montenegro. It is also known as a women’s monastery, with a living monastic community that preserves the rhythm of Orthodox tradition in the heart of Boka Kotorska.

⛪ History & Heritage (Tradition, Ruins, Renewal)

The story of Banja Monastery carries both legend and documented rebuilding. Local tradition connects its earliest beginnings to the medieval era (often linked in popular accounts to the Nemanjić period), while later historical layers are clearer: a sacred site existed here, suffered destruction, and was gradually restored through the faith and support of coastal families. Sources describing the site’s later reconstruction mention that, on the remains of an older monastery, a small altar/church element was raised first, followed by the construction of the present church dedicated to Saint George. Several accounts place the building of today’s church in 1720, attributed to Archimandrite Atanasije (Hilandarac), supported by local families from Risan.

🕯️ What to See (Church of St. George & Monastery Grounds)

1) The Church of Saint George
Simple, reverent, and intimate—this is a church where candlelight and iconography do what they have always done: create focus and calm.

2) Terraced monastery layout
Set on a hillside, the complex is arranged in levels that follow the natural slope—giving you small vantage points and a gentle sense of ascent.

3) The monastery treasury (icons and ecclesiastical art)
Multiple sources note valuable items kept in the treasury, including icons associated with Boka, as well as works linked to broader Orthodox artistic circles (often described as coming from places such as Greece and Russia), and notable examples of silver embroidery and church craftsmanship.

🌿 Atmosphere

Even though the coastal road runs nearby, visitors frequently describe the monastery as unusually peaceful—protected by greenery, stone, and the simple routine of monastic life. One church account emphasizes how easy it is to reach, with the road passing directly below the courtyard, yet the atmosphere inside remains quiet and sheltered.
