Plav ligt aan de voet van het Prokletije bergketen, grenzend aan de bronnen van de rivier Lim. Het wordt gedacht zijn naam te hebben gekregen van een afgeleide van een oude katholieke Albaneze achternaam. Plav is omringd door mooi en wild wisselend bergachtig landschap.
