Pišče

The village of Pisce in Montenegro.

Hidden high in the mountains of northern Montenegro, Pišče is a tiny village surrounded by endless pastures, dramatic peaks and some of the most untouched landscapes in the country. Far from busy towns and well-known tourist attractions, Pišče belongs to a different Montenegro — a land of open skies, scattered mountain homes, grazing livestock and roads that disappear between rolling green hills. Here, on the vast Pivska Planina, nature still sets the rhythm of everyday life.

A Village Surrounded by Wilderness

The beauty of Pišče is not found in grand buildings or crowded streets. It is found in the landscape. Soft, rolling pastures stretch across the high plateau, constantly changing character with the seasons. In spring and early summer they become intensely green and filled with mountain vegetation, while later in the year the grasses turn golden beneath the enormous blue sky. In every direction, distant mountain ranges rise above the horizon. The mighty Durmitor massif dominates one side of the landscape, while the mountains of the wider Piva region create an almost endless succession of ridges, valleys and rocky summits.

There are places here where the only sounds are the wind moving through the grass, cowbells somewhere across the valley and birds circling high above the plateau. It is a landscape that feels wonderfully remote.

Life on the Pivska Planina

For generations, life in this part of Montenegro has been closely connected to the mountains. Traditional livestock farming has long played an important role on the Pivska Planina, and that relationship with the land can still be seen around Pišče today. Small houses, barns and mountain huts appear between enormous stretches of pasture. Sheep, cattle and horses graze freely across the hills during the warmer months. There is little here that feels manufactured for tourism. And that is exactly what makes Pišče special. It offers a glimpse of an older mountain Montenegro — simple, resilient and deeply connected to the surrounding landscape.

One of Montenegro’s Most Beautiful Mountain Roads

The road through Pišče is part of the unforgettable journey across the highlands between the Piva region and Durmitor. Rather than cutting directly through the landscape, the narrow mountain road seems to follow its natural contours. Around almost every bend, a new panorama appears. One moment the road crosses peaceful grasslands; the next it runs beneath enormous limestone mountains or looks out across valleys that seem to continue forever. For travellers exploring this part of Montenegro by car, motorcycle or bicycle, Pišče is one of those places where stopping beside the road becomes almost unavoidable. Not because a sign tells you to stop. Simply because the view does.

From 1,390 Metres to the Piva Canyon

One of the most striking aspects of Pišče is the enormous difference in elevation within the surrounding region. Pišče stands at roughly 1,390 metres above sea level, while Piva Lake near Plužine lies at around 675 metres. Over a relatively short geographical distance, the landscape therefore drops by hundreds of metres from open mountain plateau towards the deep Piva valley. This vertical geography explains why travelling through the area feels so dramatic. The road can begin between high alpine meadows and, not long afterwards, descend through forests and exposed limestone slopes towards the brilliant turquoise waters of Piva Lake. Above are the plateaus. Below are the canyons. Beyond them are some of Montenegro’s highest mountains. Few parts of the country bring so many different landscapes together within such a compact area.

A Landscape That Remembers

The peaceful appearance of these mountains also hides a difficult history. Like many remote communities across Montenegro, the wider Piva region experienced the violence and hardship of the Second World War. Memorials scattered throughout these northern mountains quietly preserve the memory of local people and fighters who lost their lives during those years. They stand today among pastures and mountain villages where life has continued for generations — modest reminders that even these seemingly timeless landscapes have witnessed turbulent chapters of history.

Where Durmitor Meets Piva

Pišče lies in one of the most spectacular transition zones in Montenegro. To one side are the wide open spaces of the Pivska Planina. Beyond them rise the rugged mountains and deep canyons for which northern Montenegro is famous. Continue through the highlands and the landscape gradually becomes more dramatic as the enormous limestone formations of Durmitor draw closer. It is this contrast that makes the area so remarkable: gentle green meadows beneath some of the wildest mountains in the Balkans. Few places capture northern Montenegro quite like this.
