The Boka Kotorska region has a long naval tradition and has harbored a strong naval fleet since the Middle Ages. The fleet reached its peak of 300 ships in the 18th century, when Boka was a rival to Dubrovnik and Venice. The population of the Boka Kotorska are also known as the Bokelj or Bokez. Even nowadays the seafarer spirit is still alive and kicking.
